Thankful Thursday - PURPLE DAY® Edition

Today is Purple Day®, an international Epilepsy Awareness Day started by a then 9 year old girl in Canada. This day finally brings more awareness to epilepsy and seizures. For Empowering Epilepsy, it is our way of bringing people who support Epilepsy Awareness together to create positive, lasting memories.

Our goal at Empowering Epilepsy is to help people living with epilepsy and their loved ones discover that they are not alone! Facts about Epilepsy tell it all:

  • 1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime.

  • 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime.

  • More people have epilepsy than those living with Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and autism combined.

  • 1 in 1000 people die from SUDEP - Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy each year, and for those with uncontrolled seizures, 1 in 250 people are at risk of SUDEP

  • Other causes of death in epilepsy include accident, illness, traumatic brain injury, drowning, status epilepticus seizures, and suicide.

Once diagnosed, people with epilepsy lose their independence and experience a huge decrease in quality of life.

Empowering Epilepsy is focused on changing that conversation. We create a variety of ways to bring people together who understand epilepsy, better educate them on their specific diagnosis and treatment plan, and focus on improving their overall quality of life one person at a time.

We ask you to celebrate Purple Day with us in a few ways:

  1. Wear purple and share your pictures to help us better illustrate our community.

  2. Share Empowering Epilepsy programs and events with people that you know and love who are living with epilepsy.

  3. Support Empowering Epilepsy by donating or fundraising for us. Donations help us continue to provide free or low cost programs and services to help each individual person with epilepsy and their loved ones empower their lives. We can only do that with your support.

For those living in Northeast Ohio, this Saturday, we are holding our Purple Day® Party in person at Empowering Epilepsy Headquarters. Enjoy dinner, art therapy, and the chance to meet and talk with other people who support Epilepsy Awareness. This is a free event!

Also, we are going to have a special virtual visit from Miles Levin, the writer and director of the new film, Under the Lights. He is going to tell us more about the movie and talk about how you can see it in Cleveland later this year!

It is such a fun event, and I hope you can join us! Here is the link to register: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/empoweringepilepsy/event/purpledayparty2026/
