Thankful Thursday - Michelle's Story

Finding Empowering Epilepsy has truly changed my life. For the first time, I feel supported by people who actually understand what it’s like to live with epilepsy. It’s a relief to be part of a community where I don’t have to explain myself and people just get it.

One of those people is Leigh, the founder. From day one she has made me feel seen and valued. She takes time to know each of us personally and always remembers what we’re going through. She’s there to offer support, encouragement, and helpful information not just during support groups or events, but in between as well. That level of care is rare, and it means everything.

The support groups have been incredibly helpful not only emotionally, but medically too. Thanks to one of the guest speakers, I recently learned why my doctor recommended an iron supplement, which is something I wouldn’t have connected to my epilepsy medication otherwise. It’s nice to have as much information as possible from various sources to help connect all the dots because it can be overwhelming at times.

These groups have also made a big difference for my mental health. Just feeling less alone has helped reduce my stress - and that’s helped lower the number of seizures I have. The art therapy sessions are another highlight for me. I leave each one feeling lighter, and I take home artwork that reminds me to stay positive and keep moving forward, no matter what I’m facing. Even the holiday parties help by providing a nice break from the everyday weight of living with epilepsy.

Everything Empowering Epilepsy does is thoughtful, supportive, and made to help people like me feel stronger and more hopeful. I often tell others about this organization because I want more people to know about the impact it’s had on my life. I truly hope it gets the funding and support it needs to keep changing lives - just like it did mine.
